Six Major Processes in Web Development

16th February 2006

Web development must be done continuously. All websites have room for improvement, even those which are relatively good and surpassing the projected profits. To keep the website dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of Internet users, there are six major processes that must be implemented at every turn.

  1. Preparation
  2. This process is usually done at the beginning of web development, but it can be done even at the middle of designing the website or even after the website has been uploaded. It involves four parts:

    • The identification of the target audience
    • The determination of the purpose of the website
    • The establishment of the objectives of the contents of the website
    • The formulation of polices involving the use and development of information in the website
  3. Presentation
This process involves the design of the website. This means that in this process, the context, information, and navigation cues must be created. The range of information, decided by the web developers, to be included in the website must be divided into manageable parts. That is, the visitor, when visiting a web page, must not be subjected to information overload. Then, the arrangement and connection of pages must be based on how a visitor will most likely think. Each page must also have features that will project consistency.
  4. Inspection
This process is ideally done once the website is almost done. Using several validation tools, the developers must inspect the technical construction of the website. Aside from this technical aspect, the accuracy of the domain information must be verified. There should also be consistency in information as well as consistency in the overall presentation.
  5. Implementation
In this process, the website is uploaded. But this is not the only part of the implementation process. The web developers must create a file structure and directory that are extendible. If needed and appropriate, the HTML tools must be utilized. And for supporting the consistency of the website, templates can be employed. Lastly, the implementation must be viewed using different browsers.
  6. Promotion
In this process, the website will make its presence known in cyberspace. Its products and services will be advertised and marketed. To successfully carry out the promotion, three important steps should be fulfilled

    • Produce publicity releases and advertising which should target three groups of audiences: the current clients, the potential clients, and the whole web community.
    • Establish innovative ways to connect with the users. This will help the website determine the needs of its clients.
    • Comply with rules, norms, and practices that are implemented in online communities.
  7. Innovation
This process is must lead to the continuous improvement of the website. The web developers may use several methods to determine what parts of the website must be improved.

All of the six processes above should be conducted continuously or as needed. All of the processes are geared towards meeting the needs of the users. Such will keep the website relatively ahead of its competitors.
