Fatal Mistakes that Destroy Web Promotion

27th February 2006

The business has been conducting extensive web promotion strategies. This is why visitors flock to the website. They were given an impression that the company is upbeat, technologically-able, and efficient. But promotion does not stop in banner ads, in discussion groups or in links exchange. Promotion continues within the website. This is because once in the website, visitors will begin to form new opinions about the company.

One cannot stop visitors from attributing characteristics of the website to the business it represents. For example, if the website loads slower than a turtle, a prospective client will likely think that the business is not efficient in delivering its services. If the website does not have pictures of the product that it is selling, the visitor will think that the product is not at all great. If there are spelling and grammatical errors in the website, an Internet user will tend to assume that the people behind the website are not professionals or lacked training.

To avoid giving a wrong, lousy, unprofessional impression of the business, the website must not have any of these characteristics:

  • Very slow loading time or slow web response – which is associated with inefficiency
  • Poor or sophomoric overall appearance – which basically means “lack of taste”
  • Incorrect spelling and grammar that overwhelm the articles – which implies that the people behind the business have little capacity to produce professional work
  • Useless or insufficient information or content – which gives the impression of low quality products or services
  • Missing contact information – which could be a result of carelessness
  • Dead links and broken graphics – which indicates slipshod work
  • Too many images or graphics – which makes the visitor suspect that the business is all flash and air and no substance
  • “Trying to be cute” or animated bullets – which gives the impression of juvenile ideas
  • Unmanageable or confusing navigation – which may be due to the company’s inability to organize
  • Backgrounds that are “twinkling”, too intricate, and distracting – which indicate of frivolity
  • Disparate backgrounds on the web pages, that is a gray background in the homepage followed by a bright green background on the next one, and so on – this also gives the impression of frivolity
  • Confusing organization or absence of any organization – which is obviously the result of unplanned work
  • Colored text that may also be too stylized and render the content/article difficult to read – which implies that there is insufficient knowledge about web design, and perhaps of other vital areas as well
  • Ineffective and inferior use of frames, tables and mouse effects – which is a sign of mediocrity

If the website has two or more of the characteristics above, then whatever web promotion the company is implementing will not produce the expected sales results.
